Painting: Beach scene, 1868-77

In this lesson students are asked to describe the painting, paying attention to colours, layout, costumes, body language and posture, etc... We may divide the figures into groups, telling similarities and differences and explaining what they are doing. We could also imagine to jump into the painting and then describe what we can see, hear, smell and touch. This picture by Hilaire Germain Edgar Degas is about one of his favourite subjects: women combing their hair. In the historical notes we can read about fashion at that time and the differences in social classes. Students may compare this painting with Japanese prints and representations of Samson and Delilah.
